B’s Thug-vember

There was such excitement about Thug-vember (i.e. cooking from the Thug Kitchen cookbook in the month of November), but it fell flat for me. I may return to cooking from this book in the future but I needed a break after a few weeks.

Roasted Broccoli and Millet Pilaf

This was my first experience with millet and I am still on the fence. I don’t think this dish did anything to help me love it. I would like to try it again sometime but not this particular recipe. It tasted too earthy, like health food. (1/5)

Quinoa Oatmeal

It probably isn’t fair that I picked this as Alton Brown’s steel cut oats recipe is my favorite breakfast period; this just didn’t even come close. It was good, not great. But I did learn I don’t hate quinoa as much as I thought. (2/5)

Sweet Corn and Green Chile Baked Flautas

These were pretty good. My only criticism is that the flavor is kind of one note and it gets boring really quickly. Maybe adding the lettuce and salsa on top would have helped. (3/5)


Cornmeal Waffles with Strawberry Syrup

This was by far the favorite of the recipes we tried. Daphne even had half a waffle and loved it. I would make this again…next time I would buy finer ground corn meal though as it was kind of crunchy. (4/5)


Grilled Eggplant with Soba Noodles

The eggplant was delicious by itself. Once all of it was mixed together the flavor was so boring and acidic. I honestly think this dish would be better off with chicken (tofu?) or something a little more robust than eggplant and a LOT more vegetables.


I was going to make Stovetop Herb Popcorn but my nutritional yeast disappeared on the way back from Wegmans.

I also wanted to try Maple Berry Grits but after my disappointment with the Quinoa Oatmeal and comparing it to Alton’s Steel cut oats, I decided it was best to wait on that. I have the ingredients and will try it soon.

Lesson learned: Don’t try 3 new recipes in a week. Take it a little slower, maybe one per week to get the feel of the cookbook before diving in headfirst and ruining dinner for a week 🙂
